Born in New Jersey to Cuban-American parents, Narciso Rodriguez graduated from Parsons School of Design with a job offer to assist Donna Karan at Anne Klein. He then moved to another Klein—Calvin—to continue designing women's wear, and eventually accepted backing from Italian company Aeffe to present his first ready-to-wear show in 1997. The collection was a hit, and the orders began pouring in, including one from Carolyn Bessette, who insisted Rodriguez make the dress for her wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr.
